Reuben Sempui was born on Suswa Plateau into a very large Maasai family: “I am one of 43 children. One of my eldest brothers was taken to school by the missionaries, but he dropped out to become a warrior and to look after cattle” says Reuben.  “Despite leaving school, he believed education was very important. It was thanks to him that I went to school, as he knew the value of education.”

Despite the financial constraints faced by his family, Reuben’s father supported him through his early education, recognizing his son’s potential and thirst for knowledge. Every day, young Reuben walked three hours to school and three hours back. It was during one of these grueling walks that he would encounter someone who would end up having an invaluable impact on his wife. “I met a German guy who was hiking so I showed him the way up to Suswa crater, and then took him to meet my family and greet my father” he recalls.  Impressed by Reuben’s guidance and knowledge, the man offered to support his education, shaping his life forever. 

This experience taught him the value of cultural exchange and true connection, and he became ever more determined to share the beauty and culture of his homeland. He began working in tourism in 2008, focusing on lesser-known destinations such as Magadi, Loita, Suswa, and Kisumu, and over the years has developed and led countless off-the-beaten track itineraries in Kenya.
